Adobe Firefly + Canva AI 2.0 both launched this week. Both want you to stop clicking menus.
Two of the biggest names in design software made the same bet this week: the future of creative work is conversational.
Adobe launched a
Firefly AI assistant that lets you edit across the entire Creative Cloud suite using plain language. Instead of hunting through Photoshop’s 47 nested menus, you type “remove the background and make the sky warmer” and Firefly does it. It works across Photoshop, Illustrator, and Premiere. Not as a separate app, but as a layer inside the tools you already use.
The same day, Canva dropped
AI 2.0, which does something similar for people who never opened Photoshop in the first place. Canva’s AI assistant now calls multiple tools behind the scenes to build designs from a single prompt. Describe what you want, and it assembles layouts, pulls images, and applies branding. All without you dragging a single element.
They’re a fundamental shift in who gets to call themselves “good at design.”
For the past decade, design tools had a steep learning curve that acted as a gatekeeper. Knowing Photoshop was a skill. Knowing Figma was a skill. That gatekeeping is dissolving. When “make this look professional” is a valid input, the barrier between “I have an idea” and “I have a finished asset” shrinks to almost nothing.
If you’re a marketing coordinator building a deck, a sales rep making a one-pager, or an HR associate designing onboarding materials, this week changed your workflow. You don’t need to request design support and wait three days. You describe what you need and iterate in real time.
Everyone else benefits the most.
There’s a catch, obviously. AI-generated designs are still generic out of the box. They follow patterns. They default to safe. The person who understands visual storytelling, brand voice, and what actually resonates with an audience? That person is now faster, not obsolete. The gap between “made by AI” and “made by someone who knows what they’re doing with AI” is where the value lives.
Adobe’s Firefly is bundled into existing Creative Cloud subscriptions. Canva’s AI 2.0 is available on all plans including free. Both are live now.
